AuDHD Burnout: signs, recovery and resources.

A practical, neuroaffirming resource for recognising changes in capacity, understanding the push-crash pattern and finding relevant burnout, energy and sensory guides.

What is AuDHD burnout?

AuDHD is a community term commonly used for the co-occurrence of autism and ADHD. AuDHD burnout is not a standalone medical diagnosis, but many people use the phrase when describing burnout in the context of both autistic and ADHD experiences.

The push-crash-recover pattern

A crash can feel random when each day is viewed on its own. Looking across several days may reveal a sequence: feeling more capable, taking on more, missing early signs of reduced capacity, pushing through, then needing substantial recovery. Pattern recognition is not about blame; it is about noticing what changed before capacity fell.

Possible early warning signs

  • Energy dropping or recovery taking longer than usual.
  • Sensory input becoming harder to tolerate.
  • More irritability, overwhelm or emotional intensity.
  • Brain fog, slower processing or difficulty starting ordinary tasks.
  • Greater social withdrawal or reduced capacity to mask.
  • Rest not restoring capacity the way it normally does.

Recovery and reducing load

There is no universal burnout recovery formula. Reducing avoidable demand, creating sensory recovery, allowing capacity to be lower, protecting genuine downtime, using accommodations and seeking appropriate professional support can all be useful considerations.

Are difficult days arriving without warning?

Use the free Burnout Pattern Check to notice recent changes in energy, sensory load, executive capacity, social capacity and recovery. Your answers stay in the page and are not saved or submitted.

Track the lead-up, not only the crash

Recording similar signals over time can make relationships between sleep, sensory demand, workload, social effort, recovery and capacity easier to notice. AuDHD Companion presents your own records for reflection without diagnosing burnout or claiming that one factor caused another.

Common questions

Is AuDHD burnout a medical diagnosis?

No. AuDHD burnout is not a standalone medical diagnosis. Significant or persistent symptoms are worth discussing with a qualified health professional because other conditions can cause similar changes.

Can pattern tracking help?

It can help some people remember what was happening before a difficult period. Tracking cannot diagnose burnout or prove causation.

AuDHD Companion provides self-reflection, organisation and general wellbeing tools. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, treatment or emergency support.
